How to (Professionally) Deal with That “Annoying” Coworker
Ever worked with someone who makes you want to scream, “UGH, they’re such a jerk!”? You’re not alone. Workplace dynamics can be tough, especially when personalities clash. But here’s the truth: labeling someone as a “jerk” rarely solves the problem. So, what can you do instead? Let’s dive in.
Why Personality Isn’t the Real Problem
Unless this individual is doing things like name-calling, eye-rolling, making rude comments or things like that, then this is a teamwork problem, not simply a “they are a jerk” problem.
I am not saying their behaviors are good. And I imagine you are probably not the only one who feels this way. But the main problem isn’t this person’s personality – it’s the fact that you all don’t have a way of working through it together.
Step 1: Get Curious, Not Furious
Start by getting to know them. Ask about their interests or expertise. Give them a chance to show their best self. You might discover they’re socially awkward or simply have a different communication style. Respect often grows from understanding.
Step 2: Build Rapport for Better Conversations
As your relationship improves, you can have honest discussions about how to collaborate effectively. But remember: this requires both sides to listen and adjust. And yes, that includes you.
Step 3: Know When to Engage (and When to Avoid)
If your work only requires seeing this person occasionally, then by all means minimize unnecessary interaction. But always remain kind, courteous and professional.
Step 4: Protect Your Emotional Energy
Working with difficult personalities can be draining. Schedule time to decompress and recharge. Prioritize your mental well-being so workplace frustrations don’t spill into your personal life.
